About Me

Nowadays to walk down Regent Street in Steiglitz is like walking amongst ghosts. Once the towns business and social centre, it is now a dirt track with few buildings remaining.  As other towns in the region are practically exploding at the seams with people seeking the charm of country life, the population of Steiglitz remains at 7- a number represented throughout this work. Nestled amongst the Anakie Hills, Steiglitz is located a short drive away from my own hometown of Bannockburn.

Steiglitz’s population may be small, but they make up for it in their unbridled passion for the preservation of their town and history. The vocal Back to Steiglitz association has spent the past 7 years campaigning for the preservation of historical buildings and fund their important conservation work through events such as the annual ‘Airing of the Quilts’ which attracts people from all over Victoria to the town to appreciate the skilled craftsmanship of the quilts and the unique landscape of Steiglitz.
This series documents the skeletal remains of what once was a bustling township with visual hints of former production and dwelling. The overarching subject matter of this photo book is how nature has reclaimed the landscape of Steiglitz.

Steiglitz is a small town located in the Brisbane Ranges National Park. The town was established and famed for gold during the second half of the nineteenth century. These rich yields attracted many miners, families and business owners and by 1893 the town was home to an estimated 1500 residents.  Tragically Steiglitz’s downfall began with the tragic ‘Black Thursday’ bush fires of 1896 that destroyed many homes and valuable equipment surrounding The United Albion Mine. This led to the town’s population shrinking to 500 by 1897. Although gold did bring some financial success, life in Steiglitz was never easy and not suitable for ‘featherbed diggers’.

Tony has always been keen on building cubby houses. With a background in sculpture, prop making and design, it seemed natural that all these things would come together in a tiny house. Tony is a university lecturer by day and tiny house builder/sculptor by night.

I have always loved wool and started to spin when my girls were small. I progressed to weaving and felting after joining the Geelong Handweavers and Spinners Guild.
I have been fortunate in having the opportunity to exhibit samples of my work at local exhibitions, Geelong and Bendigo Shows and to have been a section winner at the Scarf Festival at the Geelong Wool Museum.

I have been drawing all my life and received honours and awards during my school years. I sold my first painting, a watercolour at 16.
About four years ago I had my first formal lessons in soft pastels and haven’t looked back, winning an award at the Bannockburn Art Show in 2015.
I also love acrylics for a slightly abstract style.

Over the last eight or so years I have been enjoying my card making for family and friends. The craft is enjoyable, soothing, satisfying and a wonderful way to socialise and meet new people. It is a craft that can be done at home as well as being easily transportable to other crafting venues around Victoria and even aboard a crafting cruise!
